E-education in the UK

The paper outlines the results of a survey, by the EBONI project, of lecturers' use of and attitudes to electronic teaching and learning material, providing a snapshot of the current situation in UK higher education. Differences in the extent and type of e-content usage between academic disciplines, and lecturers' intentions for the future, are discussed. Based on an analysis of their hopes and concerns, recommendations are made for increasing the development, usage and effectiveness of electronic content

An experiment with ontology mapping using concept similarity

This paper describes a system for automatically mapping between concepts in different ontologies. The motivation for the research stems from the Diogene project, in which the project's own ontology covering the ICT domain is mapped to external ontologies, in order that their associated content can automatically be included in the Diogene system. An approach involving measuring the similarity of concepts is introduced, in which standard Information Retrieval indexing techniques are applied to concept descriptions. A matrix representing the similarity of concepts in two ontologies is generated, and a mapping is performed based on two parameters: the domain coverage of the ontologies, and their levels of granularity. Finally, some initial experimentation is presented which suggests that our approach meets the project's unique set of requirements

Browsing and searching e-encyclopaedias

Educational websites and electronic encyclopaedias employ many of the same design elements, such as hyperlinks, frames and search mechanisms. This paper asks to what extent recommendations from the world of web design can be applied to e-encyclopaedias, through an evaluation of users' browsing and searching behaviour in the free, web-based versions of Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Concise Columbia Encyclopaedia and Microsoft's Encarta. Parallel lives? Ethnic segregation in schools and neighbourhoods

We provide evidence on the extent of ethnic segregation experienced by children across secondary schools and neighbourhoods (wards). Using 2001 Schools Census and Population Census data we employ the indices of dissimilarity and isolation and compare patterns of segregation across nine ethnic groups, and across Local Education Authorities in England. Looking at both schools and neighbourhoods, we find high levels of segregation for the different groups, along with considerable variation across England. We find consistently higher segregation for South Asian pupils than for Black pupils. For most ethnic groups children are more segregated at school than in their neighbourhood. We analyse the relative degree of segregation and show that high population density is associated with high relative school segregation.education, sorting

Woman\u27s place in modern drama.

While the character of women in the plays of ancient times has ever played an important part in the history of the drama, the appearance of women in the feminine roles is a distinctly recent development. It might well be said that this is a fairly modern addition to the stage. Perhaps if Aeschylus or Shakespeare were here to-day, they would shake their heads and sigh because women, whose place they considered to be in the home, should have so far degraded themselves as to appear before an audience on an equal footing with their husbands or brothers. They would probably never realize how much better would have been a woman\u27s interpretation of a woman\u27s part. This advance of women then into the public eye would be no less preposterous to them than the idea of women in politics was to our own men folk a few years ago. In order to lead up to the time when women first appeared on the stage, it might be well to consider woman\u27s position in the early drama, and to give a brief sketch of the history of the drama in the various countries

Ruth Wilson is a Professor and the Chair of the African-American Studies Department at SJSU. Her current research focuses on African American women and the new black diversity in the African-American community. In this seminar, Ruth Wilson provides an overview of three women She-roes in American history: Lucy Terry Prince, Maria Stewart, and Henrietta Lacks, whose contributions add texture to the characteristic descriptions of the 18th, 19th, and 20th century American woman.
